>VIENNAFAIR The International Contemporary
Art Fair FOCUSED ON CEE< 2008: Continually expanding the strengths

VIENNA (10th January, 2008). – Matthias Limbeck, manager in charge of new business, marketing and CEE at Reed Exhibitions Messe Wien, outlines the programme for the upcoming >VIENNAFAIR<: “In the last three years, the >VIENNAFAIR< has developed extraordinarily. Its focus on Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, its function as a shop-window for young galleries as well as artists and, last but not least, the participating major Austrian galleries have bestowed the >VIENNAFAIR< with a distinctive and unique profile amongst the international art shows. With the fourth edition of the fair in 2008 we will further expand this position.”
The fair, organised by Reed Exhibitions, will be taking place from 24 to 27 April, 2008.

Increased international character and a strong domestic market
Edek Bartz, the exhibition director of the >VIENNAFAIR< is very pleased about the positive development of the >VIENNAFAIR<: “The new international advisory committee of the event (comprising: Guido W. Baudach - Guido W. Baudach gallery/Berlin, Anne Blümel – Lelong gallery/Zürich/New York/Paris, Kerstin Engholm - Engholm Engelhorn gallery/Vienna, Ursula Krinzinger – Krinzinger gallery/Vienna, Simon Rees – Contemporary Art Centre of Vilnius/Lithuania, Anthony Wilkinson – Wilkinson Art Gallery/London, Thomas Wüstenhagen – layr:wuestenhagen contemporary/Vienna), that began its work for the >VIENNAFAIR< in November 2007, will provide another strong momentum for the further development of Austria’s most important art fair, providing for new international galleries to participate in the show. At the same time we safeguard the immensely important continuity for the domestic market for contemporary art with the Austrian committee members. In 2008, we will offer our audience again a mixture of renowned international and Austrian galleries and newcomers. This great opportunity to make some real discoveries at the same time as being able to select from the top branch of the international art world has earned us this special reputation amongst international art collectors over the past years. With the >VIENNAFAIR 2008< we can further strengthen this offer”, states Edek Bartz. Especially newcomers from Central, Eastern and South-Eastern European countries have contributed immensely to the good reputation of the >VIENNAFAIR< and will be again a major attraction at this year’s fair. ERSTE Bank will again, as already last year, sponsor a selection of young Eastern European galleries.

ZONE1 as show case for emerging talents
ZONE 1, presented at last year’s >VIENNAFAIR< for the first time, will also undergo further development in 2008. At a specifically designed area in the very centre of the fair galleries will have the opportunity to exhibit individual presentations of young artists on app. 20 square metres each, at special conditions. It will be possible to even display very large installations and video presentations. In a special exhibition at Vienna’s museum of modern art, the MUMOK, works of the winner of last year’s ZONE 1, Kamen Stoyanov, will be on display from 18 April to 18 May, 2008. Daniela Hinterhölzl, exhibition director of the >VIENNAFAIR< explains the motifs for this initiative: “It is very important to us that we not only offer the private collectors a forum at the >VIENNAFAIR< but also promote the exchange between galleries and museums that is so essential for the development of the art world”.

Already for the third time, the Vienna Chamber of Commerce will donate an award, endowed with 5,000 Euros, for the best stall presentation.

Build up the new buyers: the special programmes at the >VIENNAFAIR 2008<
With a special developed programme at the fair and with museum visits and special guided tours, the >VIENNAFAIR< will bring again approximately 200 international art collectors to Vienna – with this, the event will create an important basis for the commercial success of the participating galleries. The >VIENNAFAIR 2008< will set a special focus on guided tours for the young audience, in cooperation with schools and universities, to introduce young people to art and the work of the galleries. A series of lectures and presentations of art institutions from Austria as well as from Eastern Europe completes the diverse nature of the >VIENNAFAIR 2008<. (+++)
